Who is a stranger? This always seems like a tough topic for parents and educators to teach, but Lil’ Iguana has made it easy! The Lil’ Iguana Foundation teaches that everyone is a stranger, unless you have permission to go with them.
It is important to teach your children that everyone is a stranger, unless they have permission to go with them right then and there. By telling your child everyone is a stranger, it doesn\’t mean someone is scary or bad, it just means your child needs to get permission before going anywhere with anyone. That way it is easy for them. No matter what, they always just need to ask first.
A great example is your friendly neighbor Mr. Jones. Everyday, you and Johnny wave to him on your way home from school. Mr. Jones always has a smile and waves back. One day, Mr. Jones asks if Johnny would like to come inside and watch a movie. Should Johnny go? He sees Mr. Jones every day right? He knows Mr. Jones. BUT Lil\’ Iguana teaches even if you know the person, you have to get permission first. So, Johnny must get permission from the adult in charge before going over to see Mr. Jones. Once he gets permission, Johnny can go over and watch a movie. Maybe you can even make popcorn!
Since Johnny asked permission to see Mr. Jones, you know where he is.
By asking permission before going with someone they know or do not know, your children are safeguarding themselves against potentially dangerous situations like kidnapping or attempted abductions. It is important to teach your children about stranger danger to make sure they are prepared, and never scared in a situation.
After your child gets permission, it is important to take a buddy with them. Click the links below to talk to your children about these important safety topics.
