International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day Recipe

Every dog has it’s day – today is a day just for them. This is not only a day to appreciate your dog, but also to appreciate the power of the dog biscuit. Dog bread has been a treat since the medieval times, but the dog biscuit was invented in 1850 by James Spratt who later created the Spratt\’s Company. The dog biscuit is a tool used to train your pooch to do a trick, reward good behavior, and overall please your K9 friend. The reason this fun holiday is “international” is still unknown.

The recipe for today is for a Peanut Butter Dog Biscuit. Before you get started, you should have these following ingredients plus two flat sheet pans and bone-shaped cookie cutters.

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup low sodium chicken broth (or water as a substitute)
1 cup creamy peanut butter, at room temperature
Parchment paper (or vegetable oil cooking spray)

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Place parchment paper on sheet pan. You could also spray the sheet pan with vegetable oil or line with a silicon baking mat. Set aside. In a medium to large bowl, combine dry ingredients of flour, oats, and baking powder.

Slowly stir in broth and peanut butter until the mixture forms into a crumbly dough.

Press the dough together to form a ball.

Once the mixture is shaped, lightly flour (with the wheat flour) a work surface, or another trick is to put on the counter stretch plastic food wrap. Knead the dough for 30 seconds to make a smooth texture. Roll dough out on surface until mixture is ½ inch thick.
