Kid-Friendly Cinco De Mayo
Cinco De Mayo is a holiday many children can enjoy with the proper ideas, activities, and food. Thankfully, you have us to help you create that perfect kid-friendly Cinco De Mayo party that all will love. Here are four ideas that are simple and easy follow.
1. Easy Tacos from Tablespoon (tablespoon.com)
Ingredients:
- 1-pound lean (at least 80%) ground beef
- 1 cup Old El Paso™ Thick \’n Chunky salsa
- 10 Old El Paso™ taco shells
- 1/2 head lettuce, shredded
- 1 medium tomato, chopped (3/4 cup)
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (4 ounces)
Directions:
- Cook beef in 10-inch skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain.
- Stir salsa into beef. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly; reduce heat to medium-low. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour beef mixture into large serving bowl.
- Heat taco shells as directed on package. Serve taco shells with beef mixture, lettuce, tomato and cheese.
2. Simple Guacamole from Food Network (foodnetwork.com)
Ingredients:
- 2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and diced
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
- 1 serrano Chile, seeded, deveined and finely chopped
- 1 lime, juiced
- 1/2 white onion, chopped
- Kosher salt
- Tortilla chips or fresh veggies, for serving
Directions:
- In a medium mixing bowl, add the diced avocados and mash with a fork until smooth but still chunky.
- Add the cilantro, Chile, lime juice and onion and mix to combine.
- Season with salt.
- Serve with tortilla chips or fresh veggies, etc.
3. Pinata
Piñatas are a great activity for children to play. They are a relatively inexpensive product (ranging from about $10-$20) and they get everyone up and on their feet. Here are directions on how to use one:
- Buy (or make) a piñata
- Fill it with everyone’s favorite candy
- Tie the piñata up in a high place (ex. On a tree branch)
- Blind fold the first child
- Hand them a bat (or stick) and tell them to try and hit the piñata
- Keep giving the kids turns until they are finally able to smack the piñata open.
- Once it opens, the candy will explode out and the kids can grab it.

Having a craft at a kid’s party is always a great idea for keeping them entertained. An easy and creative Cinco De Mayo craft for your party could be making homemade maracas. Below are the directions:
Materials:
- Plastic Easter eggs
- Popcorn kernels or rice
- Plastic spoons
- Markers
- White tape
Directions:
- Fill an egg with kernels or rice
- Close the egg shut
- Tape two plastic spoons to each side of the egg (handles facing down)
- Tape the two spoon ends together
- Use the markers to decorate the white tape
