As the weather starts to get nicer, hiking is a great way to enjoy the summer at a low-risk. There are ten important things to remember whenever you go hiking like sunscreen, water, and snacks. Do you have the TEN ESSENTIALS packed when for your hike?
TEN ESSENTIALS: THE CLASSIC LIST
- Map
- Compass
- Whistle
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Extra clothing
- Headlamp or flashlight
- First-aid supplies/Repair kit
- Fire-starter/Matches

Important tip! Try and keep several of the Ten Essentials in a small waterproof bag making it easy to move those items from one bag to the next.
While the Ten Essentials cover “everyday” hiking gear, the list doesn’t cover everything you might need for certain trails. There are numerous options for gear like backpacks and hiking boots available online and at local retailers. If you are new to hiking and overwhelmed, consider joining an online social media group. The hiking community is open to helping new hikers and sharing personal experiences and recommendations.
Lil\’ Iguana want you to be safe on the trails! Before going into the woods, look up a program called, hikeSafe. The NH Fish and Game Department and the White Mountain National Forest are partners with \”hikeSafe\” to help get the word out on what hikers need to know. You can also purchase a hikeSafe card as seen below.
