Emotion Regulation for Smooth Back-to-School Transition

Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week

As the new school year kicks off, it’s not just our kids’ backpacks that need to be ready for the journey ahead—their emotions do too.

Back-to-school season can bring a whirlwind of excitement, nerves, and everything in between. That’s why teaching our children how to regulate their emotions is just as important as teaching them their ABCs.

Why Sharing Emotions Matters

Encouraging your child to share their feelings is the first step in helping them understand and manage their emotions. Whether they’re feeling anxious about meeting new friends, excited about their new teacher, or frustrated with their homework, knowing that they can express these emotions openly is crucial for their emotional well-being.

Practice Makes Perfect: Calming Techniques

During busy school weeks, practicing calming techniques like deep breathing can be a lifesaver. Take a few minutes each day to practice these techniques with your child. It could be as simple as taking five deep breaths before heading out the door or spending a few minutes doing a calming activity together before bedtime.
