Staying Safe this Halloween Season

Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week

It’s spooky season, but it doesn’t have to be scary! Halloween is a fun time for costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating, but safety should always come first. Parents, now’s the time to talk to your kids about how to stay safe while having a blast. Lil’ Iguana is here to help with some simple tips that can make this Halloween fun and safe for the whole family!

Costume Safety & Proper Footwear

Choosing the perfect costume is one of the best parts of Halloween! Whether your little one is dressing up as a superhero or a spooky ghost, make sure their costume is safe. Choose flame-resistant materials, and if they’re using face paint, ensure it’s non-toxic. Shoes should be comfortable and the right size so they can walk or run without tripping. Avoid those oversized shoes that might look cool but could cause an accident!

Make Sure You Are Visible

As the sun sets earlier in the fall, visibility becomes super important! Glow sticks, flashlights, or reflective tape on your child’s costume or candy basket are great ways to ensure they’re seen by drivers and others. Plus, glowing accessories make trick-or-treating even more fun! Remember to stay on sidewalks and cross only at designated crosswalks—safety first!

Always Get Permission

Before heading out for trick-or-treating, make sure your child has permission. They should always check in with you or the adult in charge before going anywhere. And this rule applies to entering homes too—your child should never go inside someone’s house or car without your permission, even if it’s just to grab more candy.

Take a Buddy with You

Trick-or-treating is way more fun—and safe—with a buddy! Encourage your kids to go with a sibling, friend, or an adult. Staying together means it’s easier to keep an eye on each other and ensures no one is wandering around alone. Safety in numbers!

Trust Your Harm Alarm

At Lil’ Iguana, we always remind kids to trust their “Harm Alarm.” If something doesn’t feel right or if someone makes them feel uncomfortable, they should speak up and tell a trusted adult right away. If a situation seems off or scary, trust that gut feeling! And of course, they should never go inside someone’s home or car unless you’ve given the okay.

By following these simple tips, you and your family can enjoy a fun-filled, safe Halloween. So go out there, have fun, and spread smiles—not scares—this spooky season! 👻🎃

Stay safe and have a spooky good time!
